What is A Travel Capsule Wardrobe?
As I mentioned, a wardrobe capsule is a set of clothing items that are specifically chosen to work together. You should be able to coordinate these items into different outfits so you can avoid lugging around a suitcase half-full of pieces you won’t even get around to wearing. A good wardrobe capsule will include versatile pieces such as plain tees, bottoms, layers, and accessories that all coordinate with each other in color or style. The idea behind a travel capsule wardrobe is to pack fewer items that can be used in multiple combinations, creating several different looks while still being easy to manage and pack in one bag.

The Benefits of a Travel Capsule Wardrobe
Having a travel capsule wardrobe eliminates overpacking—the bane of every traveler’s existence. This means you won’t be weighed down by unnecessary items. Additionally, having fewer pieces in your suitcase will leave more room for souvenirs or other purchases you may make while away from home.
Extra Space
If you’re like me and you plan on doing a lot of shopping, you can even pack a foldable travel bag. You can use this for items you pick up along the way and carry it on the plane as your personal item. I once used a SCOUT bag to haul back several pounds of chocolate from Belgium. On another, I used an extra bag to bring home souvenirs from Italy which included pasta, candies, and various leather goods.
Organization
Even the most unorganized person can appreciate knowing exactly where to find something. A travel wardrobe capsule allows you to stay organized during your trip without really having to work at it. All of your clothing will be confined to one space (your suitcase) and you won’t have to worry about rummaging through multiple bags looking for that one top or bottom. Everything will be easy to find! Plus, with less to keep up with, there’s less risk of losing items along the way.
Convenience
Packing only essentials means less bulk. You may not think much about it if you’re heading down to the beach for a week. After all, you will probably dump your bags in the hotel room and spend your days with your toes in the sand. However, overpacking on a trip that requires a lot of movement is a different story. Learning to pack light will make it much easier to get around if you will be using any form of public transportation during your trip.
Some people like to pack gobs of clothes and other personal items for any and every trip. If that is you, that’s totally ok. I’m not judging. Ultimately, if maneuvering excess bags and weight on and off mass transit, down cobblestone roads, and up long staircases is what you enjoy, that’s all that matters. Hats off to you.
Time
Packing light will also save you loads of time since you won’t have to be standing around baggage claim with hundreds of other people. If you can learn to pack strategically and perfect your travel capsule wardrobe, you’ll never have to check a bag again. You’ll save time at baggage claim which will help you save time at customs. After all, you’ll be ahead of all the people who did check a bag and are stuck waiting.
Peace of Mind
Overpacking can present a lot of challenges. It also opens the door to one potential disaster. Lost luggage. Everybody has seen airports like Heathrow, JFK, and Denver on the news with thousands of suitcases in the background after mass cancellations and widespread delays. It has become such a problem that people have even started putting airtags in their suitcases.
While it’s not a bad idea to pack an airtag, you’ll still be stuck without your bag for a while. Sometimes, these bags take weeks to reach their owner. Luggage gets misplaced all the time and it’s not always due to major flight issues. Having your bag go missing on your way home is one thing. When a bag doesn’t make it to your holiday destination, it can ruin your trip. It helps if you have travel insurance but it is still a major disappointment and inconvenience. Packing efficiently in a bag you can carry with you at all times means you can arrive worry-free.
How to Create a Travel Capsule Wardrobe
A travel wardrobe capsule allows you to create multiple outfits from fewer items. Instead of packing your entire closet, you can reduce the number of garments you bring by focusing on key pieces that are versatile enough to be worn in different ways.
A good rule of thumb when creating your travel capsule wardrobe is to pick neutral colors that pair well together like black, gray, white, and navy blue. Soft colors like cream and camel also often work well. These colors are excellent building blocks because they go with almost anything in your closet, making it easier for you to mix and match different items throughout your trip.
Building the Basics
Obviously, the type of clothing you will need to pack depends on what the weather will be like where you are traveling. Having a travel capsule wardrobe will allow you to easily pick out pieces that you know are comfortable and versatile.
It helps to start with the basics. Building a wardrobe capsule requires an understanding of what types of items are essential and how they coordinate. It’s important to think about each item and how it will work together with everything else. When you are done, you should be able to mix and match anything in the capsule to make a comfortable and stylish outfit combination.
Choosing Pieces for Your Travel Capsule Wardrobe
When you are considering items like t-shirts and tank tops, try to choose pieces that work for casual wear during the day but can be easily dressed up. Again, think about how they might pair with your favorite jeans or trousers. Sometimes all you need to elevate an outfit is a chic blazer or the right pants. Thinking like this will give you more options without taking up too much space in your suitcase.
As far as materials go, opt for lightweight fabrics that are easy to care for and pack well. For example, in the summer you may choose fabrics like jersey, linen, or chambray. For a winter travel wardrobe, wool, silk, and cashmere are all warm and lightweight. Try to find wrinkle-resistant options that don’t need ironing after being stuffed in a suitcase.
A few travel wardrobe staples that I love…
Tailoring Your Travel Capsule Wardrobe
Once you have the basics down, start building capsules for different seasons. While the majority of your wardrobe should transition well, you can’t avoid season-specific pieces like fleece-lined leggings for cold weather or summer dresses for warmer climates. This is where you will need to start thinking about smart layering pieces.
Expand Beyond the Basics
Your main travel capsule should include the basics – tees, button-ups, your favorite jeans, etc. Now it’s time to expand and create mini seasonal capsules to supplement that. By adding only a few more items you will end up with a full capsule for every season!
To complete a summer capsule, you will want to add a few pair of shorts that work well with the t-shirts and tank-tops. Again, neutrals like black, denim, and khaki will give you the most versatility. If you like dresses, you should include a few options that can easily transition from casual to dressy. You will also want to think about one or two pairs of sandals that will match everything and be comfortable enough to wear all day.
For a winter travel wardrobe capsule, add a few sweaters and layers that are both warm and lightweight. A fleece or wool pullover works well over a t-shirt or long sleeve crew to stay warm on a casual day. For a more dressed-up look, you can layer a nice sweater over a button-up.
Take Care of Your Feet
You’ve picked out a great selection of clothes. Now, you need to narrow down a few pairs of shoes that you can pair with various outfits. You will need to be sure to include walking shoes, warm (preferably waterproof) boots, and comfortable sandals. You may also want to consider a pair of dressy flats for when you need them and slides for the pool or beach.
The key to choosing shoes for your travel wardrobe without getting carried away is to choose wisely. Do your research. A white pair of tennis shoes can be worn with almost anything these days. My Nike Court Legacy tennis shoes are my go-to pair. They are comfortable enough for a full day of walking and look cute with just about any outfit. If I’m not wearing those, I’m probably wearing my Tieks flats or Birkenstock sandals. In the winter, Sorel wedges and Ugg waterproof boots are both good options to keep your feet warm and dry.
Shoes you might find in my suitcase…
Complete the Look
Now you have an all-season travel capsule wardrobe. Woo-hoo! It’s time to complete your look and bring those outfits together with key accessories. Scarves are both practical and stylish. My advice is to have at least two in your wardrobe. It’s nice to have one that is lightweight for spring and fall in addition to one that you can count on in very cold weather. Finally, don’t forget a few jewelry pieces for a finishing touch and a stylish hat for bad hair days.
Creating a wardrobe capsule is an easy way to maximize style while minimizing space when traveling! With 20 or fewer pieces, you can create multiple looks without carrying too much with you on vacation. Choose neutral colors and classic silhouettes that won’t date quickly and opt for lightweight fabrics that won’t take up too much room in your suitcase.
Pack Easier and Worry Less
Once you understand the basics of building capsules tailored to different seasons and travel scenarios, packing will become a quick and stress-free task. Besides saving time and money, you’ll never have to worry about checking a bag again.
