They use cover crops and natural fertilizers to maintain healthy soil, and they employ environmentally friendly pest management techniques.
The vineyard produces a variety of wines, including Muscadine, Blanc Du Bois, and Merlot. The Muscadine wine is produced from the native and humidity tolerant Muscadine grape. Blanc Du Bois is a variety that produces a sweeter wine much like Zinfandel as well as a more crisp and fruity dry wine. The award-winning Blackberry Merlot is made from locally grown blackberries. Most of the wines are on the sweet side, characteristic of the state’s sweet tooth. I brought home a bottle of blackberry merlot to make a blackberry cake.
Although I don’t typically enjoy dessert wine, I also brought home an interesting port called Louisiana Heat. The name comes from the aging process during which the wine is aged in barrels in a heating room to caramelize the sugar and draw out a woodsy flavor. The result is a unique port that is overwhelmingly sweet and will balance out your dessert.
Aside from wine production, Landry Vineyards is also a popular destination to get together and enjoy some live music. The vineyard hosts a variety of events throughout the years including concerts and Lagniappe Saturday. There are some debates about the origins of the word Lagniappe but essentially, the meaning is a gift from a merchant to a customer. There is no cover charge on Lagniappe Saturdays at Landry Vineyard. Just be kind and tip the performer.
