Why you should plan a trip to Breckenridge Oktoberfest in Colorado
Breckenridge is PERFECT in the fall. The green aspen leaves begin to transform into their vibrant orange and yellow autumn hues as the crisp mountain air begins to cool. Though more evident later in the fall, the color change is usually just beginning around the time of Oktoberfest. Nevertheless, Breckenridge Oktoberfest is the perfect excuse to head back to Colorado. Beer, brats, and crisp mountain air – how many more reasons do you need to pack your bags for a weekend in one of the best little mountain towns in Colorado?!
When is Breckenridge Oktoberfest?
Breckenridge celebrates Oktoberfest each year during the month of September. This year, the official kick-off to Breckenridge Oktoberfest 2019 begins at 2 pm on Friday, September 6th. Perfect timing for a late lunch! Friday is usually fairly mellow as out-of-towners start arriving and vendors begin setting up booths on Breckenridge’s historic Main Street.
Saturday, however, the biggest block party in the Rockies is in full swing. Booths open at 11 am serving all of the beer, sausages, and apple strudel your heart desires. Of course, you can also snack on Bavarian Pretzels and plenty of other German goodies as well.
The festival continues through the weekend ending at 5 pm on Sunday, September 8th. You can view the official schedule here for a timeline of events.
Is Breckenridge Oktoberfest Family-Friendly?
YES! Mild weather and plenty to do outdoors makes Breck a great family-friendly, fall destination. Breckenridge Oktoberfest is easily enjoyed as a family with music, shopping, and loads of Bavarian eats and treats. Since beer is not served on the streets after 6 pm, it doesn’t get too crazy in the evening either.
When you are not filling up on German goodies, families can try out some of the many outdoor activities like hiking, bicycling, or the Epic Discovery Park on Peak 8. If you do go to Epic Discovery, you will have the chance to enjoy a scenic ride on the BreckConnect gondola as well. While you are wandering Main Street, watch out for raptors!
How to get to Breckenridge (from Denver)
Technically, Breckenridge has it’s own airport but it is only about a 1.5 to 2-hour drive from the Denver International Airport. Since the drive is mostly scenic, it’s quite enjoyable. It’s also likely to be significantly cheaper than finding a flight that goes all the way into Breckenridge. Since fall is a shoulder season in Colorado, you will be able to find more affordable flights than those throughout the summer high season and peak ski season. I recommend searching for flights through Skyscanner or Momondo to find the best deal. We fly from Oklahoma City and typically find the best deals on United or Southwest.
Driving to Breckenridge, CO
Although you won’t need a vehicle in Breckenridge, we always rent a car. We like to do this because it gives us a little more control over our trip. Besides, I always enjoy taking in the mountains from the passenger seat. Hubby drives! Since Denver is warmer, the fall colors begin to peak through as you enter into the Rocky Mountains. My favorite part is always when we pull into Breck. It’s such a quaint and charming mountain town and, after all these years, it has started to feel like home.
Renting a car in Denver is fairly straightforward. Most of the rental car companies are located on-site at the airport. Before we go to Breckenridge, I always search TripAdvisor to compare prices, but you can also use sites like Skyscanner or RentalCars to find the best deal. In the past, we have used the budget company ACE Rentals who I found through Tripadvisor. Although they are no longer servicing Denver, Payless Rentals is also a great budget option. They are located just off of airport property but offer a free shuttle to their customers.
Suprisingly, I’ve seen deals as low as $9 per day from ACE and Payless. Regardless of where you are traveling, it’s worth checking them out. However, other times, there is little difference in pricing among the companies.
Taking the Denver to Breckenridge Shuttle
If you would prefer not to drive yourself to Breckenridge, you can opt to ride the Epic Mountain Express Shuttle. The trip will take a little longer (a little over 2 hours
Currently, one-way transfer service rates from the airport to your hotel through Epic Mountain Express are $59 per adult (13 & up) and $28 per child (12 and under). However, discounts are offered for multiple persons and the company occasionally runs specials. More details can be found on their website where you can also make reservations.
Where to stay during Oktoberfest in Breckenridge
There are many great places to stay in Breckenridge, but lodging really comes down to budget and location. We enjoy staying at the Mountain Thunder Lodge because it is so convenient to Downtown Breckenridge. A few years ago, we found out Breck Condo With A View rents a one bedroom suite at Mountain Thunder for cheaper than we have ever found other websites. It’s perfect if you are traveling as a couple and we stay here at least once each year.
Tanya, the owner, also rents out three other condos including a two bedroom if you choose to take the kids. All of her properties have easy access to Peak 8 and 9. You may find them listed on Airbnb as well, but you will save a bit of cash by booking directly on her website. If you decide to book one of her condos, be sure to select Travels of Jenna when it asks where you heard about it. I don’t receive a commission, but I do receive a small credit toward my next personal stay. 🙂
