From Munich to Breckenridge: What is Oktoberfest?

Dating back to 1810, the first Oktoberfest was held in Munich, Germany, to celebrate the marriage of Crown Prince Ludwig to Princess Therese of Saxony-Hildburghausen. What began as a one-day horse race quickly evolved into an annual event that has become synonymous with Bavarian culture and beer. Today, Oktoberfest in Munich attracts millions of visitors from around the world who gather to enjoy traditional German cuisine, music, and, of course, beer.

Breckenridge Oktoberfest captures the essence of the original festival in Munich while adding its own unique mountain charm. Held in the picturesque town of Breckenridge, this three-day event takes place in September, when the autumn colors of the Rockies create a stunning backdrop for the festivities. The festival grounds are in the heart of downtown Breckenridge, allowing visitors to easily explore the town’s shops, restaurants, and historic sites in between beer tastings and entertainment.

Is Oktoberfest Really Making a Return to Breckenridge, Co this Year?

Based on this past year (2022), it seems like Breckenridge Oktoberfest is finally back to normal. Since the pandemic began in 2020, the town’s famous fall celebration had been somewhat hijacked. Not this year. This year, Main Street was full of happy mountain town escapees, souvenir stein in hand, cheering to a post-pandemic, guilt-free social event. A lot of them. The larger-than-usual crowd was a bustling indication of shared enthusiasm to celebrate in one of the most popular villages in the Colorado Rockies.

If you’ve ever been to Breckenridge in the fall, you probably already understand why Oktoberfest is one of the best excuses to spend a weekend in town. The weather is generally beautiful and 2022 was no exception. It was neither too hot nor cold. In fact, it couldn’t have been more perfect to take advantage of one of the many beautiful hiking trails in Breckenridge.

If you asked me what my ideal morning looks like in Breck, I would tell you this: breakfast at Blue Moose or Cabin Juice followed by an hour or two on the trails and a refuel with a mocha from The Crown on Main. That’s exactly what we did on our first full day. Hiking beneath golden Aspens is one of the best things about visiting Breckenridge in the fall.

Is Breckenridge Oktoberfest Family-Friendly?

YES! Mild weather and plenty to do outdoors make Breck a great family-friendly, fall destination. Breckenridge Oktoberfest is easily enjoyed as a family with music, shopping, and loads of Bavarian eats and treats. Since beer is not served on the streets after 6 pm, it doesn’t get too crazy in the evening either.

When you are not filling up on German goodies, families can try out some of the many outdoor activities. Hiking trails are a popular way to spend a few hours outside. Renting bicycles from a local shop and taking a ride to Frisco for lunch is also fun. Don’t worry if you’re not too athletic. That’s what e-bikes are for! If you’re traveling with children, head up to the Epic Discovery Park on Peak 8.

How to get to Breckenridge (from Denver)

There are a few different ways to get to Breckenridge from Denver. Most commonly, people will rent a car and drive. However, there is also a shuttle and even flights that go all the way to Breckenridge. Personally, I prefer driving to enjoy the beautiful scenery. Renting a car may or may not be cheaper than the alternatives. Whether you are planning a trip for Breckenridge Oktoberfest 2023 or a ski trip this winter, I’ve broken down your options so you can decide what works best for you.

Booking Flights

Technically, Breckenridge has its own airport, but it is only about a 1.5 to 2-hour drive from Denver International Airport. Since the drive is mostly scenic, it’s quite enjoyable. It’s also likely to be significantly cheaper than finding a flight that goes all the way into Breckenridge. Since fall is a shoulder season in Colorado, you will be able to find more affordable flights than those throughout the summer high season and peak ski season.

I recommend sites like Google Flights and Expedia to find the best deals on airfare and accommodations. If you prefer Southwest, you’ll have to keep an eye on prices through their app or website. We fly from Oklahoma City and typically find the best deals on United or Southwest.

Driving to Breckenridge, CO

Although you won’t need a vehicle in Breckenridge, we always rent a car. We like to do this because it gives us a little more control over our trip. Besides, I always enjoy taking in the mountains from the passenger seat. Hubby drives! Since Denver is warmer, the fall colors begin to peek through as you enter the Rocky Mountains. My favorite part is always when we pull into Breck. It’s such a quaint and charming mountain town and, after all these years, it has started to feel like home.

Renting a car in Denver is fairly straightforward. Most of the rental car companies are located on-site at the airport. Before we go to Breckenridge, I always Expedia to compare prices, but you can also use sites like Tripadvisor or Booking to find the best deal. We often use the budget company ACE Rentals. Surprisingly, I’ve seen deals as low as $9 per day from ACE and Payless. Regardless of where you are traveling, it’s worth checking them out. Payless Rentals and Thrifty are other budget options. Both offer a free shuttle to their customers.

Taking the Denver to Breckenridge Shuttle

If you would prefer not to drive yourself to Breckenridge, you can opt to ride the Epic Mountain Express Shuttle. The trip will take a little longer (a little over 2 hours) but will transport you directly from the airport to your hotel in Breckenridge without any hassle. It may even be the cheaper option depending on how many days you plan to stay in Colorado, how many are traveling in your party, and what kind of deal you can find on a rental car.

Currently, one-way transfer service rates from the airport to your hotel through Epic Mountain Express are $59 per adult (13 & up) and $28 per child (12 and under). However, discounts are offered for multiple people and the company occasionally runs specials. More details can be found on their website where you can also make reservations.

Where to stay during Oktoberfest in Breckenridge, CO

There are many great places to stay in Breckenridge, but lodging really comes down to budget and location. We enjoy staying at the Mountain Thunder Lodge because it is so convenient to Downtown Breckenridge. A few years ago, we found a company, Breck Condo with a View, that rents both one and two-bedroom condominiums typically for cheaper than comparable locations like Airbnb.

Tanya, the owner of Breck Condo With A View, rents out several condominiums. One of those is a two-bedroom at The Village if you choose to take the kids. This location has excellent access to Main Street, putting the festival and virtually any of the local stores and restaurants within walking distance. Plus, it has an incredible view of Peak 9. We stayed here during a winter snowboarding trip, and it truly is ideal, especially with such easy access to the lift. She also has two one-bedroom properties with easy access to downtown. We stayed at one of these during other trips and it is less than a 5-minute walk from Main Street.

If you’re there during ski season, all of her properties have easy access to Peak 8 and 9. You may find them listed on Airbnb, but you will save a bit of cash by booking directly on her website. If you decide to book one of her condos, please be sure to select TRAVELS OF JENNA when it asks where you heard about it. I don’t receive a commission, but I do receive a small credit toward my next personal stay…. and I stay with her frequently.

Of course, you can also search Tripadvisor or Booking to see what is available and find the best deal on accommodation. VRBO is also a suitable place to look for affordable rentals.
