I’d be remiss if I didn’t confess that Shreveport never occupied a prominent place on my travel radar. It was merely a pit stop en route to more captivating destinations. But over the past year or so, I’ve made it a mission to seek out those overlooked diamonds in the rough. What I’ve discovered is that every place, no matter how unpretentious, has its own unique allure waiting to be unearthed to reward a discerning traveler.

From weekend sojourns in quaint Oklahoma towns to epic adventures in bustling metropolises, I’ve relished them all. It’s all about perspective and an open mind – a winning combination. So, when I was invited to explore Shreveport as part of a destination campaign, I set out on the journey optimistic. Little did I know, the jewel awaiting me in Shreveport was the Fairfield Place Bed and Breakfast.

Sweet Southern Charm in the Historic Fairfield District

As we pulled up to Fairfield Place, my excitement was palpable; it was evident that this would be no ordinary stay. Nestled within the Fairfield Historic District, this 19th-century Victorian home stands proudly among Shreveport’s oldest and most ornate residences. A leisurely drive along Fairfield Avenue, flanked by a parade of historic homes, is a visual feast for the soul.

The architectural grandeur of these homes is nothing short of inspiring. They possess an innate ability to stir the imagination, compelling you to stow away mental notes for your future dream home. I found myself admiring the diverse styles like Queen Anne and Four-Square dwellings with a fresh appreciation for the craftsmanship and artistry that seems lost to time.

The Welcoming Warmth of Louisiana

Louisiana, I dare say, boasts the warmest welcome you’ll ever encounter in the United States. While the term “Southern hospitality” is often thrown about, it doesn’t quite capture the essence. It’s something deeper, more profound. Whether you journey north to Monroe, south to Lafayette or Lake Charles, or anywhere in between, the sentiment remains the same. Now, New Orleans might dance to its own rhythm in a universe unto itself but it’s a welcoming city, nonetheless.

The best analogy I can offer is this: Louisiana folks are akin to an Italian Nonna. They greet you with sheer delight, eager to craft unforgettable experiences, and determined to feed you until you are blissfully satiated. And, let’s not forget, Louisiana has a sweet tooth. Don’t think you’ll escape the state without indulging in beignets, pralines, or some other sugary confection. Nonna, in this case, ensures you’re well-treated to delectable goodies.

The Fairfield Place Bed and Breakfast is a Quaint (Yet Sizeable) Blue Abode of Delights

The azure, two-story Victorian residence exudes a comforting aura from the moment you set your eyes on it. The full-length porch on both levels extends a warm invitation, beckoning you to stay awhile. With our keys in hand, we stepped inside our weekend abode. The interior is a well-preserved glimpse into the past, complete with creaking wood floors and period pieces.

There’s a guest room to the right and, next to it in the hall, an antique apothecary chest filled with an assortment of tea bags in tiny square drawers. On the left, the dining room boasts a collection of intimate tables paired with vintage wood chairs and eclectic decor. A whimsical bar nestled in the corner offers complimentary drinks and mixers for guests to enjoy.

Jars, bowls, and other containers of various shapes and sizes grace every nook and cranny, each holding an assortment of snacks and candies. It’s amusing what trivial things capture your attention and spark memories. Like a prize left behind by a clandestine gathering of grandmas, a bowl of strawberry bonbons sat atop the entryway table. Where do these little red treasures even come from? I couldn’t resist indulging in one, simply for old times’ sake.

Imagine sinking into a plush bed adorned with a mountain of oversized, fluffy pillows. That’s the kind of experience Fairfield Place Bed and Breakfast offers. Beyond its aesthetic appeal, both inside and out, it strikes a harmonious chord between 19th-century elegance and 21st-century amenities. For me, it was the sensation of profound comfort, the echoes of an era defined by lock and key, and the soothing sway of the porch swing. Even the nighttime serenade of cicadas, a sound often loathed by urban dwellers, was therapeutic, transporting me to simpler times when Friday nights were dedicated to toasting marshmallows and chasing fireflies.
