Shawnee Annual Tree Lighting
When: November 16, 2018 from 6-9 pm
Where: Downtown Shawnee at the Celebration of Life Park.
For many, the holiday season officially begins with lighting of the Christmas tree. Head to Downtown Shawnee for an evening of family fun at the annual Christmas Tree Lighting. Shawnee will officially kick off the holiday season on November 16, 2018 with food trucks, pop-up shops, various choirs and entertainers, and even a Santa Ride. Many storefronts on Main street will be open for shoppers to peruse, grab dinner, or warm up with a cup of coffee. The official lighting is scheduled for 8:15 but festivities begin at 6 pm.
Jenna’s Downtown Shawnee Favorites
Food: Hamburger King
Serving the best hamburers in town since 1927, Hamburger King will win you over with both the food and the experience. Call in your order right from the table and enjoy a warm meal “back in time” at this old 1930’s diner. You can find Hamburger King on the corner of Main and Oklahoma.
Drink: Gathering Place Coffee Co
The Gathering Place Coffee Co is located just east of the intersection of Main and Oklahoma. Made with Topeca coffee beans roasted just up the highway in Tulsa, Oklahoma, this cleverly crafted cup of joe is a perfect respite from the wintery air. Not a coffee drinker? Plenty of freshly brewed teas are available as well. If you’re in the mood for a little (ok, big) treat, Redbird Bakery operates within the coffee shop as well offering a variety of pastries to pair with your perfect drink.
Shopping: Richards Drug and Savvy Bites
Right next door to Hamburger King is the most well known pharmacy in town. Richards Drug is locally owned and has been in business at 324 E. Main since 1939 (also at the Main and Oklahoma intersection). Jamie and her staff continue to offer top notch service with a personal touch. What most don’t know about this charming little drug store is that it’s also the perfect place to find unique gifts and home decor.
Savvy Bites is also a favorite because of their supply of specialty items. This little Main Street shop is chock full of gifts, gadgets and specialty food items. If you enjoy cooking, you MUST check out their extensive supply of infused balsamics and olive oils. You’ll find this shop between Union and Bell.
Shawnee Santa Ride
When: November 16 at from 6:45 to 7:45 pm
Where: Meet at 113 N. Bell Ave
This year, Spokelahoma and the SEFF are hosting the first ever Shawnee Santa Ride. Grab your bicycle and meet at the spOKeLAHOMA shop on Main Street for free refreshments and an hour of fun cruising the streets on two wheels. Participants will ride through nearby neighborhoods to admire the Christmas lights and return to Main Street just in time for the Tree Lighting Ceremony. If you’re not too shy, dress up as Santa or one of his elves!
Annual Hanging of the Green
When: December 1, 2018 from 7:30 to 9:30 pm
Where: OBU Raley Chapel
The Christmas spirit runs deep at OBU’s annual Hanging of the Green. This 81 yr. old tradition celebrates the season, honors outstanding seniors and promotes peace within the community. Mark your calendars for an evening filled with beautiful carols and peaceful fellowship. This year’s title is“Gloria in Excelsis Deo!”
Sassafras Shopping Event

Pictures with the Grinch

Shawnee Christmas Parade of Lights
When: December 6, 2018 at 7 pm
Where: Main Street
It’s a 50’s Christmas this year at the annual Shawnee Christmas Parade. Bring the whole family down to Main Street to watch one of the largest night parades in Oklahoma. Given the theme, I expect we will get to see plenty of 1950’s classic cars!
Before the parade, you can attend the “Cans Film Festival” at the Jones Hornbeck Theater. In exchange for a few cans of non-perishable food items, you can enjoy a holiday feature film. Details are pending, but this post will be updated as they become available.
Christmas with Maggie McClure and Shane Henry (The Imaginaries)
When: December 6, 2018 from 7-9 pm
Where: The Gathering Place Coffee Shop
Maybe a parade isn’t your thing, but there’s still a reason to head downtown on December 6th. Oklahoma’s own Maggie McClure and Shane Henry, also known as The Imaginaries, will be performing at The Gathering Place from 7 to 9 pm.
Come for the full 2 hours or pop in after the parade. Either way, if you love holiday music, Christmas with Maggie Mcclure and Shane Henry is a show you won’t want to miss. What better way to end an evening than to grab a hot tea and a warm pumpkin cinnamon roll, settle into the cozy atmosphere and soak up the Christmas spirit?
If you know of an event and would like to see it added to this list, send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org or post your suggestion in the comments. Happy Holidays!
