5 Family Activities in OKC the Kids will Love
If you haven’t thought about spending a weekend in OKC with your family, now is the time. As an Oklahoma native, I can tell you first-hand that OKC has really stepped up its game over the last several years. From a total revamp of Bricktown to a food scene that rivals the likes of Nashville, OKC is better than ever and definitely worth a spot on your list of weekend getaways. Here are 5 family activities in OKC that will help you plan a fun-filled weekend with the kids.
Thanks to Visit OKC for hosting me and my kids for the weekend so we could have a fresh experience of some of the best family fun OKC has to offer. As always, all opinions are my own.
Bricktown is in the heart of OKC and full of everything you need to enjoy a day out or a nice weekend. There are a ton of great restaurants for when hunger strikes and a little something for everyone to enjoy in between. If you’re a baseball fan, you can catch a Dodger’s game at the Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark. Love basketball? Watch the Thunder play at the ‘Peake. Energetic and fun-loving kiddos (and adults) can burn some energy at Brickopolis, an arcade complete with putt-putt and laser tag.
If you’re in the mood for a little low key entertainment, hop on the Bricktown Water Taxi for a relaxing ride and a little OKC history lesson. The Water Taxi is also a great way to get from point to point if little legs get tired of walking.
Does your family love a little adventure? Head over to the Riversport Adventure Park in the Boathouse District! If you put this on your itinerary, get ready for a big day! There are a ton of activities including river-rafting, zip-lining, a sky trail and even an 80 ft. free-fall. Whether you have never tried white water rafting or you already love it, you should definitely give the rapids a try. My kids were pretty nervous at first, but rafting at Riversport OKC ended up being the most memorable experience for them during our staycation in OKC.
Frontier City is Oklahoma’s only theme park and a favorite for an exciting day of family fun. As its name implies, the park takes you back to the Old West once you enter through the gates. In between thrill rides and carnival games, be sure to catch one of the gunslinger shows!
Summer is obviously a popular season at Frontier City. The kids are out of school and the Summer Concert Series brings some of your favorite bands in for a concert in the park. However, fall is my personal favorite time to visit. Aside from milder temperatures, this time of year offers one of my favorite seasonal attractions. Fright Fest begins in October offering loads of Halloween fun and seriously spooky haunted attractions.
I’m also really excited about the all-new Holiday in the Park. This event begins the last week of November and runs through the New Year. Who doesn’t love a theme park decked out in holiday cheer?! I hear there will be over a million Christmas lights displayed throughout the park. I can hardly wait!!!
Visiting the zoo is one of our favorite things to do as a family and, undoubtedly, one of the most popular family activities in OKC. One of the things I love about the OKC Zoo is that it keeps getting better and better every year. The latest advancement at the zoo is Sanctuary Asia which just opened to the public a couple of weeks ago. This new area totals 14.5 acres of space in the zoo and presents habitats of 8 species including elephants, rhinos, and red pandas. The Lotus Pavilion, central to Sanctuary Asia, offer a unique dining experience with new meal options and the ability to view some of the animals in their habitats right from your table.
If you head out to the zoo, one of the best options is to purchase the Zoo-It-All pass. This pass covers your entrance into the park as well as access into the various shows offered throughout the day. It also covers a ride on the carousel, access to train/tram rides and feedings for both the Lorakeets and Giraffes!
Wheeler Riverfront Plaza
The Wheeler Riverfront Plaza is a true gem in the OKC area and one that is still being discovered. In fact, I hadn’t even been myself until our recent staycation! It is here that you will find the most instagrammable spot in town – the OKC sign with Ferris Wheel in the background. What makes this particular Wheel so cool is that it’s the old Santa Monica Pier Ferris Wheel. How did it get to OKC? Well, a developer purchased it off Ebay! I guess you really can find anything on Ebay.
The main reason people head out to the Wheeler Plaza is to snap that pic and ride the wheel but that isn’t all Wheeler Riverfront Plaza has to offer! A taco truck, well dispersed hammocks and multiple outdoor games available make this place perfect for a date night and one of the best family activities in OKC.
